Public Works Fleet Management / Vehicle Maintenance
The City of Edmond Fleet Management / Vehicle Maintenance Division of Public Works is responsible for the acquisition, maintenance, and repair of the city’s fleet, which includes approximately 450 units of rolling stock consisting of automobiles, vans, trucks, heavy equipment, and the city’s transit fleet. This division is an internal service fund, in which each department with rolling stock pays its fair share to fund the division’s entire budget.
Overview of the Division
The Vehicle Maintenance Division's facility is an Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certified Blue Seal Facility. The Blue Seal Recognition Program requires ASE certification of at least 75% of the staff technicians, with at least one technician certified in each area of service provided.
The Vehicle Maintenance staff consists of eleven team members who are responsible for the preventative maintenance and repair of all city vehicles and equipment, ordering and installing parts, and performing tire repair and tire replacement. An on-call mechanic is always available after hours to provide wrecker service for all types of city vehicles and equipment.
The Fleet Management Division is responsible for managing the replacement cost schedule of all city vehicles and for developing specification and bid packages for new vehicles. This division is also responsible for the service implementation of new vehicles and equipment and the removal from service of all vehicles and equipment being replaced. Lastly, the division also purchases and stores the three types of fuels available to city fleet:
- #85 ethanol
- Diesel fuel
- Unleaded gasoline
For the past ten years, Vehicle Maintenance has utilized an in-house parts distributor, NAPA Auto Parts, which has significantly reduced vehicle downtime awaiting parts for repair.
Reducing Downtime & Improving Efficiency
In addition, the division installs and maintains GPS hardware in the city’s fleet, which improves the efficiency of dispatching vehicles, especially for emergency calls.
