Phase I, Intelligent Transportation System 2nd Street/Edmond Road Corridor Project
This project consists of installing fiber optic cable and replacing the traffic signal cabinets and controllers and associated signal equipment at 21 intersections from Santa Fe Avenue, east to Saints Boulevard in order to bring them into compliance with the National Transportation Communication for Intelligent Transportation System Protocol (NTCIP) standards. The project will also include installation of wireless radios at four of the city water towers. These intersections will connect to the Traffic Management Center via fiber optics and wireless communication network.

The Oklahoma Department of Transportation awarded this project on April 7, 2014 to Midstate Traffic Control, Inc in the amount of $3,041.862.75. 

July 2016 Update:  Waiting on Contractor to install the remaining detection devices before we can have a final inspection on the project.  The City will develop a "punch list" of items that will need to be addressed before the City will accept the project from the contractor.  Unknown completion date.   

Kelly, north of Covell to south of Coffee Creek
The Kelly Avenue parkway road construction project will begin Wednesday, July 17, 2013. The Kelly Avenue widening will start approximately 1000 feet north of Covell and will continue north to a point 350 feet south of Coffee Creek. The street will be widened to provide a four-lane divided roadway with left turns at all public streets. There will be a new traffic signal light at Kelly and Prairie Village Drive which will also serve as an additional access point into Mitch Park, Mathis Skate Park, and Cheyenne Middle School. The project also includes street lighting and landscaping. There will be 5 foot wide sidewalks on both sides of Kelly.

 The Oklahoma Department on Transportation (ODOT) awarded the project to Duit Construction Company of Edmond in the amount of $5,934,304. Project funding is 80% federal funds and 20% city funds. ODOT will administer and inspect the project. Edmond will have personnel available on the job site as necessary.

Periodic lane closures may be necessary for some of the construction activity. Motorists are advised to use extreme caution and obey traffic signs and flagmen while traveling through the work zone as workers and equipment will be present.

Project complete. 

33rd and Broadway
This project will provide for dual southbound and westbound left turn lanes, a single eastbound, westbound and southbound right turn lane. The entire intersection will be reconstructed in concrete pavement. Signal light modifications will accommodate the changes in lane configurations. This project is part of the 2000 Sales Tax Improvements. 

Oklahoma Department of Transportation has awarded this project to Allen Contracting Inc. in the amount of $5,144,114. Work will begin on July 20, 2015. The contract time is 330 calendar days. Contractor is to maintain 2 through lanes on Broadway along with a single left turn lanes at all times during construction. 33rd street will have one through lane along with one left turn lane at all times. Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes during construction

July 2016 Update: All pavement lanes have been constructed. Contractor starting to open up lanes of traffic. Contractor is still working on sidewalks, signal lights for pedestrians, and the retaining wall on south side of 33rd.  ODOT is reviewing an issue with the drive approach on 33rd to the Hobby Lobby to determine whether it needs to be re-done. 

2014 Traffic Safety Improvements
This project will include school zone safety devices on Sorghum Mill Rd east of Broadway at the new Elementary School. Also included are lane configuration improvements on I-35 East Frontage Rd south of 15th Street. This project will be funded with 100% City funds estimated to be $60,000.00. The anticipated start date is spring of 2015.

July 2015 Update: Project Complete.

"Share the Road" sign project
This project will install traffic signs to advise motorists to watch for bicycles in the roadway. The signs will be posted on Boulevard from Clegern to the south City limits and on I-35 Frontage Roads from 2nd St to the south City limits. The project will be funded with 100% federal funds in the estimated amount of $86,700.

July 2015 Update: Project Complete.

Covell and Santa Fe
Covell and Bryant
Short term improvements include construction of left turn lanes and left turn signal phasing. The project is funded with 100% City funds estimated at $1,500,000. Construction plans are 95% complete. The anticipated start date is late summer/winter of 2016.

March 2016 Update: There are 4 remaining parcels of land that need to be secured. Property appraisals are complete. The City has sent out offer letters to the land owners and are currently negotiating the purchase. Utility companies will be given authorization to start relocating their lines within the next several weeks.

Covell Widening, Fairfax to I-35 Southbound on/off ramp
This project will widen Covell to a four-lane divided roadway. There will be a section of widening east of Sooner six lanes wide to accommodate future commercial development. There will be left and right turn lanes at major commercial driveways. The project also includes widening the intersection of Covell and Sooner and will include a signal light as well as street lighting throughout the project along with 10 foot wide multi-use paths on both sides of the street.

Oklahoma Department of Transportation has awarded this project to Allen Contracting Inc. in the amount of $11,798,388. Work began on July 20, 2015. The contract time is 310 calendar days. Contractor is to maintain 1 through lane on Covell and on Sooner at all times during construction.  Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes during construction

July 2016 update: Contractor is building a large box structure for drainage under Sooner Rd north of Covell. This box structure will extend into the City site where the hotel/convention center building is located.
