Edmond Electric Certified in CUP Program
Muncipal Electric Utility Recognized for Excellence
During the April 14 Edmond City Council meeting, Edmond Electric Director Charlie Burgett was presented with a $20,000 check by Cindy L. Holman, OMPA General Manager, on behalf of the Oklahoma Municipal Power Authority's (OMPA) Board of Directors, in recognition of continuation of certification in the Competitive Utility Program (CUP).
OMPA's CUP program is a voluntary program that started in 1995. Edmond was the first OMPA member city to be certified as a Competitive Utility and received the initial certification on April 1, 1996.
The CUP program provides the 35 member cities with a way to evaluate and improve the operation of their electric utilities. It provides two types of reward - recognition in the form of certification, along with a check for $20,000, and financial rewards in the form of reductions in the city's wholesale electric costs.
"For Edmond Electric customers, CUP certification is evidence of their municipal electric utility's committed to excellence in its operation and delivery of reliable and cost-competitive electricity," said Burgett.
The Authority is an organization that was created by Edmond and other cities that own and operate their municipal electric systems. After experiencing several years of wholesale power cost increases, 26 municipal electric systems, including Mangum Power, banded together to aggregate their power supply needs. The Oklahoma legislature authorized the formation of OMPA in 1981. The Authority now serves 35 municipally-owned electric systems in Oklahoma.
