Edmond Electric Director Participates in Public Power Day of Giving
Charlie Burgett Helps New Orleans Family Restore Their Home
On June 20, Charlie Burgett, Director of Edmond Electric, joined more than 150 volunteers from around the country in New Orleans, La., to help rebuild communities that were ravaged by Hurricane Katrina in August 2005. The "Public Power Day of Giving"-sponsored by the American Public Power Association (APPA)-included projects at several different sites in New Orleans city, St. Bernard Parish and other communities in the Greater New Orleans area.
The event was held in conjunction with APPA's 2008 National Conference & Public Power Expo and gave its members an opportunity to give back to a community in need. APPA partnered with the St. Bernard Project-a nonprofit, grassroots organization that helps families rebuild their homes in St. Bernard Parish, Beacon of Hope-a grassroots organization committed to cleaning up neighborhoods in order to encourage homeowners to return to the city, and Camp Restore-a volunteer organization dedicated to rebuilding homes and cleaning and reclaiming neighborhoods.
Working side-by-side with families, volunteers learned their stories of survival, and what they love about their community while helping to rebuild it.
