Edmond City Council Expands Recycling Program

Plastic Bottles and Drink Containers Type 3-7 Now Accepted Through Curbside Program

The Edmond City Council approved an amendment to the contract for city's curbside recycling program at Monday's Council meeting. The amendment to Waste Management's contract provides for curbside recycling of plastic bottles and drink containers designated as type 3 through 7.

The curbside recycling program was implemented in December 1997. The original contract provided for collection of aluminum beverage cans, tin food cans, glass bottles and jars, newspapers, magazines, plastic milk jugs, aerosol cans and plastic beverage and food containers stamped with "1" or "2" on the bottom.

Effective immediately, the recycling contractor will now accept plastic beverage containers and bottles stamped with "3" through "7". There are no additional costs to recycling customers or to the city for acceptance of the additional recyclable materials.

Some of the materials that cannot be accepted through the curbside program include egg cartons, foam, plastic wrap, cardboard, cereal boxes, tissues or paper towels, oil, antifreeze or chemical containers. Corrugated paper board cannot be accepted through the curbside program but can be recycled at the Edmond Recycling Center at 20 W. 3rd on Saturdays between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
