Water Conservation Plan Goes Into Effect June 1
Residents Asked to Voluntarily Use Outdoor Watering Schedule
Edmond city officials are reminding residents that the city’s water conservation plan will automatically go in effect on June 1. The plan, which was approved by the city council in 2002, is in effect until October 1 and is aimed at managing summer water use, which can more than double during the hottest, driest part of the season.
Each year beginning June 1, residents are asked to voluntarily use the outdoor watering schedule for lawn watering. The schedule is based on the ending number in the home or business address and provides one week day and one weekend day for outdoor lawn watering.
In addition to the specific outdoor watering days, residents are asked not to water lawns between 7 PM and midnight. This break in watering allows water reserves to be replenished.
Based on the demand on the water system, the city manager determines when a change in the level of the plan is needed. Edmond’s daily water use is typically 10 to 11 million gallons per day (MGD). During summer peak use, that amount can climb to 22 to 23 MGD.
The water conservation plan goes into effect at Level One. If the water demand becomes high and reserves begin to be depleted, Level Two will be implemented. At this level, the watering schedule and time restrictions become mandatory.
Should Edmond experience a severe water shortage, all weekend lawn watering and washing vehicles is eliminated. Level Four is reserved for a water supply emergency and prohibits all outdoor water use.
The restrictions apply to outdoor lawn watering and washing vehicles with a water hose. Trees and shrubs can be watered with a handheld hose at any time and on any day. There are no restrictions on washing vehicles at commercial car wash businesses.
