Citizens Police Academy
The Citizen's Police Academy is a free 13-week series of classes that is designed to enhance relationships with community members by familiarizing academy participants with the Edmond Police Department, its policies and practices.
The next Citizen’s Police Academy is scheduled to begin on September 9, 2008.
The intent of the Citizen Police Academy is not to train citizens to become police officers, but to show participants first hand the daily responsibilities and expectations of the occupation of police officers and other police staff. Participants ask questions, discuss issues and view demonstrations.
Sample topics covered include:
- Accident Investigation
- Crime Prevention
- Crime Scene Investigations
- Firearms
- Shoot/Don’t Shoot
- Special Investigations
- Use of Force
It is desired that upon completion of the Citizen's Police Academy, participants will have a clearer understanding of the duties, responsibilities and community interaction expected from police officers and will share their knowledge with others in the community.
What are the requirements to attend?
- Minimum age of 18 years
- No criminal record
- Must be an Edmond resident or work in Edmond City limits
- Candidates are encouraged to attend all classes
There is no cost to participate. Classes are Tuesday evenings from 6:30 – 9 p.m. Classes are held in the Downtown Community Center located at 28 East Main. One class will be held at the Edmond Police Department Firearms Range.
