Litter
Litter is pollution. Litter thrown on the ground can end up in our storm drains, ditches, and streams. Stormwater runoff carries large quantities of street litter to streams, rivers, and lakes.
Street litter is often made of plastics. Plastics take hundreds of years to biodegrade and can be harmful to birds and animals if they become entangled in it or mistake it for food.
There are simple things you can do to reduce litter:
- Throw all litter in trash cans.
- Keep litter out of pickup truck beds, and cover pickup loads so trash doesn't blow away.
- Recycle and reuse items whenever possible.
- Pick up trash around your yard, street and neighborhood park. Not only does this help wild life and the environment, you're doing your neighborhood a favor too!
