Pollution Solution!
We all know that litter is unsightly but did you know it can pose a health hazard, too? Litter becomes home for disease-spreading insects like flies and mosquitoes. Broken glass, plastic and aluminum can injure or kill our wildlife. Where litter has accumulated, it invites people to add more. The presence of litter has an impact on our quality of life, and it decreases property values.
Here are some simple steps you can take to be part of the pollution solution:
- Use household garbage bags or plastic grocery bags to bag the loose trash that goes in your trash cart. This is especially important in our "windy" state!
- Talk to your children about littering. The 13-24 age group is the most likely to litter.
- Don't throw fast food wrappers, drink cans, etc. on the ground or out of your car window. If a friend litters in your presence, remind them that it is your tax dollars that are wasted on the never-ending process of litter clean up.
- Encourage your civic club, church group, or other community-minded organization to participate in Operation Clean Streets. Remember: Your participation means community beautification! Keep Edmond Beautiful will provide coffee and doughnuts for volunteers, as well as a prize for the most unusual trash collected!
Composting
Compost is nothing more than rotted, decomposed organic materials - grass, leaves, garden or food waste. It forms a dark, crumbly material chocked full of nutrients for your plants and lawn. It can help lighten heavy clay soils, improve drainage and make it easier for roots to grow. It also helps sandy soils hold water and nutrients. It’s a great home project, taking little room and effort.
